Cream Puff Dreams in the Big Apple: A NYC Pastry Expedition

Growing up in my family, we are always on the hunt for new cuisines and definitely a place to satisfy my sweet tooth. My father is also a foodie and one day as a teen he arrived home with a box of desserts from a new bakery. It was a yellow lunch box with blue lettering and a cute logo of a grandpa with a beard. Beard Papa’s doesn’t sound like a pastry shop, but with its cute and whimsical design, I was willing to try them. He stated they were delicious, and I would agree that I’ve never had a cream puff like these 🤤

Their website states they started in Japan with the goal of being the world’s best cream puffs. I can sense they’ve tested many recipes until they got the right one to reach their goal of being #1. I can literally taste the freshness of the creamy vanilla custard and the soft puff pastry. I’m more of a vanilla person in the vanilla vs chocolate debate and so the original was the first one I’ve tried. Eating these pastries was so lite so it’s understandable if you eat more than one! I decided to one day have my father take me back to the shop in Manhattan. They’ve moved locations since, but you still have four locations in NYC to try one of these.

Once I enter the shop, you are greeted by the cashier. You order your choices which are made fresh to order. You pick your shells and then the custard. They didn’t have many flavors when I was younger, but now they have a variety of choices to choose from and even have seasonal flavors. They kept the custard flavors simple. I always stayed with the original and strawberry shells with the vanilla bean custard.

If you’re a cream puff person or are in charge of purchasing desserts that are alternatives to donuts please purchase from Beard Papa’s! You will be a fan. Sadly they are not in my area anymore since I’ve moved, but they have over 400 shops around the world. Please try one and let’s share who has even better ones than these in the comments!
